One of my all-time favourite technology stories is about the television researchers who bought a regular family computer and connected it to the Internet. They didn’t take any security precautions, and waited to see what would happen.

Within seconds, the machine was under attack. On average, the PC was hit with a new virus, worm or malicious download every 15 minutes, day and night, for a month. Had this been a real computer, hackers would have been able to redirect the user’s web browser, display hundreds of pop-up ads an hour, track everything that was typed on the machine (including passwords and bank details), and even use the PC as a base to attack other vulnerable computers around the world.

Using the Internet can be a risky business, and it isn’t always easy to know what precautions to take. And I’m sure I’m not the only person to have gone into a complete meltdown when I’ve realised that my PC is infected with some Spyware that means every time I search for something in Google, I’m confronted with a risqué foreign site.

That’s why I was keen to work with BitDefender when they asked me to become involved with this community. We hope that Safer Surfing community will become a place where bloggers can find realistic, sensible and accessible information on all aspects of family computing. You won’t find any “Facebook Causes Cancer” scaremongering in this community – just easy to follow tips and advice to help your family make the most of the Internet.

We’ll be providing regular online chat with the security experts from BitDefender, as well as introducing you to experts in other aspects of technology and blogging. Over the coming months, we hope to develop a range of tutorials and resources that will help you and your family surf safely – and with confidence.

At this stage, we’re keen to find out more about what your concerns are, as bloggers and parents. Do you worry about letting your kids use the Internet, or wonder how you can keep them safe if they’re accessing content on mobile devices? As a blogger, do you want to know more about how to protect yourself from hackers or spam comments? Whatever your questions, let us know, and we’ll do our best to provide you with answers.

Best Wishes,

Sally
